Introduction
In the spring of 2004, I agreed to enter a Special Education classroom at Parklawn
Junior Middle School to assist students in developing media based projects
as a response to their literature study. The classroom was Ms.V's
Home School Program which is designed for students who are in need of a learning
environment that provides support for remedial studies, mostly in language arts
and mathematics.
Many of the students are in the middle grades 7 and 8 for many of their subjects
but read and write well below grade level. One aspect of the language arts program in
Ms.V’s class, is a novel study. Student’s chose their books
with teacher guidance to ensure an accessible reading level while maintaining
student interest in terms of subject matter, personal preference and age appropriateness.
